Leash reactive dog training3/3/2024 Our story can go on and on as we found out more about this puppy (who Stef nicknamed "Hurricane Harley”), the worst was that Harley was highly dog aggressive. When we saw the deplorable conditions this poor puppy was living in, we decided to immediately bring him home. The History: We went to meet a 6 month old German Shepherd puppy to be a companion for our 4 year old dog. Our German Shepherd, Harley, came to us with a laundry list of issues, from medical to psychological. Harley, the Dog Aggressive German Shepherd Pup I only wish I could move her down to So Cal! I have and will continue to recommend her. I can't believe that I am now one of those people I always envied - the ones with the perfect dog by their side at restaurants and public places. He is an absolute joy to be around and I am approached every day by people wanting to tell me how well trained he is. There is no need for him to be naughty or destructive. Most importantly, Rio is a happy, fulfilled dog. His life is better because he gets to go everywhere. I am confident that he is well balanced, well behaved, and will follow his commands. The bond that Rio and I now share is what owning a dog is supposed to be about. She explained things in ways that made sense and made it easier for me to execute. She works just as hard with the human, and we all know that's where the real problem usually lies. The immediate connection, respect and leadership that the dogs give to her is astonishing and must be witnessed to believe. The dedication and patience that Lori has is admirable. Wow, was I wrong! Lori and her staff brought Rio to his full potential in under 2 weeks. All of this cost 3 times what I would have paid Lori Hamilton Dog Training in the first place! Sadly, I believed that this behavior was all my boy was capable of. After a three-week course the trainer told me Rio would need an additional three weeks to "really get it." The end result was a dog that I couldn't trust, who followed commands IF he felt like it, barked constantly, and still reacted to any dog that passed by. I originally sent Rio to a less expensive trainer. But you gotta be steadfast in your approach.I traveled from Orange County, CA to have my standard poodle Rio trained by Lori Hamilton. Correcting this behavior will take constant repetition over several weeks. You’ll see in this video where Ariel and Koda start and how nicely the lesson gets the message across to Koda and his behavior at the end. Bad manners are bad! Being rude is not acceptable. Either they will develop more and more into frustration, they will meet a dog that doesn’t see it as playful and bites them or they will scare a person. I’d like to explain why correcting for this behavior is critical.ĭogs that act like bullies (even though it’s playful) will eventually land themselves in trouble. All of you know that I believe correcting a dog for bad behavior is critical. Being too hard on a correction can be damaging to a dog’s spirit and not correcting hard enough will not serve as a strong enough message. Remember, the correction must be properly suited to the infraction. What you will see here is the timing and intensity that I deliver in a correction. I will post occasional lessons bringing you along, especially with cases like this. Some people would see this as aggression, but I see it as displaced prey drive. Koda would become quite reactive to other dogs on leash and the behavior wasn’t getting much better. He got Koda as a puppy but started noticing some behaviors with him on leash that made him uncomfortable. I’ve worked with Ariel and his other dog before. This weeks lesson brings you along on a lesson with me. I think this week’s online dog training lesson is going to help so many of you understand not only leash reactivity, but the proper timing of a proper leash correction. Countless shelter dogs have this as a primary reason for being dumped in shelters and many lose their lives over it. Over the past 10+ years I’ve dealt with hundreds of dogs who have this behavior, both as puppies and adult dogs. Even when a dog doesn’t follow through with aggressive behaviors, it is still a problem and can turn into aggression left unchecked.
